Dusty Tapes: Manasseh & Joey Jay on Kiss

For a generation of London roots reggae lovers, Nick 'Manasseh' Raphael's radio shows on the now tragically sold-out and commercialised Kiss FM were pivotal. The show went out between 3am-6am on Saturday night/Sunday morning, but despite the late slot still had a big impact on its loyal following - for those not up for an all-nighter, alarm clocks and tapes had to be at the ready!

Nick's deep selection and minimal presentation style made for possibly the best roots and culture show Ive yet to hear on radio. For those unfamiliar, Manasseh's own productions are up there with the best UK dub acts - be sure to check out his material. Great producer.

I live in hope that a decent roots and culture show will return to London's airwaves...radio continues to neglect real roots music, and even the pirates don't play dub cuts, as far as I can hear. The early nineties really were a mini-golden era with Norman Jay's brother Joey Jay, Manasseh and Rodigan all pushing the sounds on Kiss. Joey Jay's 'Word, Sound and Power' was a mighty show, but was filling a shorter, prime time slot, and so didn't get to go as deep as Nick's I would say. I really owe them all a debt of gratitude for really turning me on to the wealth of great music connected to Jamaican culture.

I've managed to find a few old tapes of Nick's and Joey's shows (sadly most tapes lost along the way...), and they still sound great - these are they:

The first release of mine to come out on netlabel Terra Incognita Recordings. Brass Islands of Dub explores slightly different territory than usual, primarily thanks to the trumpet and flugelhorn talents of Kevin Robinson (Jazz Jamaica All-Stars/Jazz Warrior/Incognito), who features prominently on all the tracks. Kevin’s horn parts bring an additional degree of melody in comparison to other releases, with tracks such as Isla de la Juventud touching on Cuban musical traditions, whilst Highlands pays homage to the golden age of the Jamaican dub era.

A selection of 94/5 hardcore junglism, most of which, by coincidence, i heard first on Kool 94/5FM! If there's a theme to this mix its the drum programming - some breathtaking beats on this one. Programming has become a bit of a lost art I think - theres too much lazy copy and pasting that goes on these days.

The mix opens up in a cinematic style with a Vangelised-out remix I recently did of Dillinja's classic Angels Fell, drawing on the source Bladerunner material the track was built on - a world exclusive!- hope you like that... From there moving straight into a no-holds-barred back-to-back four-track amen workout, before catching breath with the Foul Play-alias classic Drowning in Her - an all time favourite. From there we slide into the deep and deadly Rumble, then on into Mindgames by System X - an early Photek alias project and a gem of track. A couple of the best jazz stepping jams of the era up next, before signing out on three bonafide smashers - hang around till the very end for the Daz Ellis tribute mix - oh gosh!

This one is a part two to a previous mix, Still Run Deep. Whereas that one went through some deep dnb from the mid-nineties, this one takes in future thinking tracks from 97 up to 02. Producers such as d-bridge, instra:mental, rockwell etc have recently livened up the scene by experimenting with minimal and progressive formulas - i think the selection here could be considered part of the roots of that new dnb tree.

Theres plenty of depth charges from the likes of M.I.S.T, Doc Scott (Nasty Habits) and Hidden Agenda - some of which have to go down as the earliest examples of the minimal dnb sound. But its not all stripped down - there are a fair few upfront but 'travelling' tracks in the mix to. Alongside some forgotten and more obscure gems there's also a few classics: I think Ed Rush and Optical did a lot to bring depth to the mainstream of dnb back at that time. Taking it home on my favourite Ram track, Electro Melody, and then as a bonus outro a bit of 5/4 dnb with live violin on a track by Cornwall's Prolog. Special dedi on this one to Robin Be, Reverend M, Jack of Dubs, Cid Poitier, and everyone who likes to go in...

London's history with pirate radio is deep and today London runs it redder than ever - is fair to say that London has the most vibrant pirate radio scene in the world. Dusty Tapes: Bass Persuasion

This one has been carbon dated to 1996, and was my first innocent stab at laying down some jamaican tunes. Thing was in those days i can't have had much more than a dozen dubwise tracks to my name - barely enough to fill a tape - what I had came mainly from dusty boxes in second hand furniture stores round my part of town. Despite that, I got lucky and picked up what I now know were some great tracks.

No tracklisting for this, but expect to hear some scientist, heptones, revolutionaries, lee perry wailers cuts, a couple of dancehall tracks, as well as some uk dub from disciples and shaka - all rounded of with a dose of junglism, including a bit of guy called gerald. Nice for me to have this for prosperity, but hope its entertaining enough a listen for you too.

Dusty Tapes: Can't Stop the Love

This is a mix tape I put together in 1999. In those days i was glued to the decks, and directly inspired by Mix Master Max (see previous post), I got into the art of finding two tunes from different genres and mixing them through to make a remix of the two tracks - a bit like mash-ups today i guess. Over time I had a whole bunch of these, all well rehearsed, with pitch speeds memorised, and this mix is a collection of all these live remix specials. I was dead proud of this tape at the time, and made a load of copies which I gave out. Some what upsettingly for me side B of this is blank, and I know there was another 45mins of these. If I can track down a full copy I'll update this.

Dusty Tapes: Mix Master Max on Defection 1992

I'm in the process of digitalising what tapes have survived to see this day. Like a lot of people I recorded lots of stuff off pirate radio (theres stories of people driving to the edge of London just to listen to the weekend pirates!), and if you wanted to make a mix tape for your mates, it meant buying a stack of blanks and doing a load of copies. I'm going to post up a small selection of tapes here, starting with this one which is very important to me. Defection 89.4 was a hardcore jungle station that ran in the first half the nineties. For me it was the best of all the pirates up at that time - a professional attitude, brilliant DJs, and even great MCs too.

Mix Master Max's shows were truly special, and this tape is a fine example, which I've listened to so many times I'm amazed it still plays. Max was full of tricks: scratches, juggling doubles, and playing dancehall tracks and mixing hardcore tunes over the top - this in particular was a huge influence on me. Most importantly the selection was impeccable and unique. I heard him live once back in the day at Roller Express (Future Myth), and he did all the tricks live too. He pops up now and again at a few oldskool nights. A legend in my book.

Nothing but love to all Defection crew: Chunks, Miley, Chattabox, Mix Master Max, DJ Wicked, Sonic, Nitro, Sketch,Wise, Ram, Flight, Nicklebee, King Size, Force of One crew, not forgetting Kemistry, Storm and the rest, and extra big shout to Lt Stitch. Oh, and big up Akt, who'd blam anything that moved, including the label of this tape!

As the scene continues its rise into the mainstream its been the upfront stuff that has come to dominate - kick drum rolls into breakdowns and distorted leads are all well and good from time to time, but what first impressed me with the music was its subtlety and depth. Cid's selection is true to that original blueprint, and fresh to boot - I can't get enough of it.

Guest Mix: Sunday Scene - Steph J

When I kicked off this site I had a couple of vague rules: firstly to try and keep the chat to a minimum and let the music do the talking, and secondly only to post my own mixes and productions. However, I'd like to break this second rule and share with you a guest mix from Steph J who has put together a top class selection of 95-98 UK garage, which is sounding particularly sweet in the summer sun. Trust me the selection here is as good as it gets - tune after tune after tune!

Personally, in those years i had my head deep in the drum n bass and dub, though as a pirate radio lover in london you couldn't help catching some bumpy garage vibes. London Underground, Freek and Ice FM were all pushing it hard, and it goes down as another great era in London music. Steph J is a pirate radio-junkie too, and she's got some more pirate style mixes lined up, so watch this space for those. Shubahada! Pt.1

This is the first of a two-part mix taking in some sweet african music. I haven't travelled that much, and have never been south of the mediterranean, so partly i love this music for its escapism, but its not just that, these pieces of music tick all the key boxes for me: centrality of drums, rhythm and trance, a valuing of the quality of sounds, a good dose of transcendentalism, and a direct way of self-expressing that never seems contrived. Also, the music is never rushed, and if it takes ten minutes to work it out, so be it - modern living is way too fast so it always feels like a home-coming to get into a world where time is there to be taken up with playing.

In case you would like to know more about the tracks there's a little text file of liner notes you can grab along with this mix. Im no expert, and finding out is half the fun, so what little I know about the music here I'll write down. There's more goodness coming up in part two, and there'll be a dedicated afro-jazz-funk mix at some point too.

KRS One - There's Only One KRS

What made me buy that BDP cassette Ghetto Music that day as a teenager I don't know, but it was a lucky moment. I knew nothing about KRS at the time, and was buying a few tapes just by their covers, or maybe having read something in the liner notes. '88 was the year for rap music for me - I discovered albums like PE's Nation of Millions, De La's 3 Feet High, Jungle Brothers Straight Out the Jungle, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, LL's Walking with a Panther and then Ghetto Music came along and blew me away (starting this mix with the opener from that killer LP).

For me KRS remains the greatest rapper of all time: master of delivery, heavy production, conscious and righteous lyrical content, and always showing real love for music, truth and knowledge. This is a little mix of some favourites (not sure how I missed Jack of Spades out). It would've been nice to put some newer tracks in as he still makes some smashers but I don't have them on vinyl. Oh, and I'm definitely no hip-hop deejay but I had to throw in a couple of scratches in there to keep it real! Big up KRS and thank you!

Stevie Wonder's Journey through the Secret Life of Plants + Green's The Secret Life of Plants

Growing up, one record that got played a lot in our house was Stevie Wonder's 1979 double album 'Journey through the Secret Life of Plants'. It's a record that holds a special place in my heart, and always had an air of mystery about it. The 1976 album 'Songs in The Key of Life' is often cited as the high point of Stevie's creative powers, and three years later music lovers were keen to hear what was next - no one was expecting this. 'Journey through...' is a soundtrack for a film called 'Secret Life of Plants'. Half the tracks were instrumental odysseys, the other, strange songs about orchids, fly-traps and power flowers. One track 'Race Babbling' is on the DiscoNections mix below.

Supposedly the album is considered one of the first New Age records, and the braille-embossed gate-fold cover when unsealed and opened for the first time released a flowery perfume. It also contains the first use of a digital sampling synthesizer, the Computer Music Melodian, used in virtually every track of the album. 'Journey' is also generally believed to be the first digitally recorded album.

For years I wondered what the film could be like, and somewhere along the line I thought I heard it never got completed, so that only the record remained. That was wrong - a film was made, and this is it. Unfortunately no restored DVD version exists, but considering I never thought I would see it, this more than makes up for it.

The subject is the conscious nature of plant life, which is a position I have some sympathy with, though the science presented in this isn't exactly tight. If you don't have time to watch the whole thing at least check out the opening 6 minutes, a wonderful instrumental sequence painting the creation of the world - though I do recommend checking the whole mescaline-inspired audio-visual experience. Theres lots of time lapse going on, as it hadn't been done before, and supposedly audiences couldn't get enough. Stevie makes an appearance in the closing minutes. I thought this was timely, what with spring unfolding:

Disco has had a rough time of it. The connotations with gold medallions and hairy chests are hard to shake. The anger it provoked in the USA, leading to a public lynching of disco records at the Disco Demolition Night is quite stunning. Public Enemy's Chuck D, in his more militant youth, raged against disco, berating it for its lack of politics and general hedonism - he thought it was anti-revolutionary and a set back for black america (a view he's softened on since).

Getting on for thirty odd years later disco can be seen more importantly as the beginning of what we call dance culture. Disco gave us the 12 inch. It put the DJ and the mix at the centre. It cemented the heaven-bound combination of drugs and dancefloors. The remix and the re-edit. The original four to the floor. It took studio production techniques to a new level. Yeah, there are a lot of bad disco records out there, but that's true in any genre. Overall I think disco is owed an apology. For all its subsequent excesses we owe disco a lot.

This little 50 minute mix picks up on some of the different flavours and interpretations of disco, from straight up party grooves through to love songs, boogie bizzniss, detroit-style deepness, social consciousness, and jazz-funked work outs. The selection is rooted in that 78-80 window when disco was flying highest, but there are a couple of excursions into the future to see how the spirit has remained. Even if your initial reaction to disco is negative - and count me in that camp - try and give this a go with an open mind, and think what the world might be like had disco never come along... a worse place I'm sure.

Must be something about the dark nights in the depths of winter making these mid-90s deep rollers sounding as good as ever. This mix is a selection of the deepest cuts from all the labels that represented that post-hardcore sound, including Metalheads, Moving Shadow, Creative Source, Reinforced, Prototype, Basement, Dee Jay Recordings and of course Good Looking.

By the time '95 came around there were a lot of people who'd been raving their hearts out for as long as their grey matter could remember, leaving nervous systems hyper-sensitised, telepathic powers enabled and egos wiped! This is the soundtrack for those spaced out days...Special dedi to all the Milk Bar Speed cru.

Dark Side of the Rainbow

Dark Side of the Rainbow (also known as Dark Side of Oz or The Wizard of Floyd) is a name used to refer to the act of listening to the 1973 Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon while watching the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz for moments where the film and the album appear to correspond with each other. This is a phenomenon that has been much discussed, but few have experienced.

This film comprises of the first 42 mins of Wizard of Oz, with the soundtrack of Dark Side of the Moon overdubed. A sophisticated sound mix has been carried out which fades in and out the original Wizard of Oz soundtrack to pick up on interesting synchrnisations, and to avoid clashing with the lyrics of the Dark Side of the Moon. Also, subtitles of the lyrics are included as they are sung (embedded into the film, not as a seperate sub file, as this is a VHS rip).

This was put together about 15 years ago and has now been liberated from a decaying VHS!

Regarding synchronicities:
It quicky becomes apparent that there are very many synchronicities between the music/lyrics and visual soundtrack and images. My experience of it is that the whole becomes greater than the parts. It really works on a surreal and fantastic level, as well as on a more concrete narrative level. I hope you enjoy it - it really stands up as a piece of art of its own right.

A DnB mix from 2001 - a good time for the scene I think - a variety of formulas around, and lots of creativity in all of them. Some highlights include some early Twisted Individual - that track 'Disfunktional' a real boundary-pushing, techno-tinged work-out - much underrated. Dillinja's 'Why?' was a real scene-changing track at the time and still sounds tuff, bluesy and deep, whilst Total Sciences 'It's Not Over' does it for me every time I hear it - definitely a persy. Opens with the national anthem: the 45 'disco' cut of the almighty 'One Blood'.

Some random highlights: 'FreakOut Music', an instrumental about the dangers of Western debauchery, the kick-ass 'Meri Bahenian', which sounds like its led by a Harlem marching band, 'Been Music', as deep as it gets, with a lo-fi ambience and spooky lead line Aphex Twin would be proud of, and finishing with some oldskool beautiful songs. Plus lots more shizzle besides. Runs just over 60mins.
